Shoreline a barrier to rising seas

THE coastal region of Bundaberg could be one of the few seaside spots in the state to escape the consequences of sea levels increasing due to global warming.

Councillor Ross Sommerfeld says the Bundaberg region has no cause for alarm if global warming causes the oceans to rise by the predicted 800mm.

Queensland Environment Minister Kate Jones released a new scientific report this week that predicted the state could expect coastal erosion and permanent inundation of coastal land as a result of a predicted 0.8m sea level rise by 2100.

Ms Jones released the new publication, Queensland Coastal Processes and Climate Change, at a conference in Cairns called Greenhouse 2011: the science of climate change, where delegates from around the world gathered to hear from leading scientists and climate change experts.
