The Canal Estates (Prohibition) Bill 2011 was tabled in Parliament by the Tasmanian Government on the 16th of March and is due for debate this week. The Bill was developed following last years landmark decision from the Tasmanian Planning Commission against the Walker Corporation’s proposed canal estate in Ralph’s Bay, Lauderdale on the basis that the proposal was “inherently unsustainable” and was inconsistent with the objectives of the Resource Management and Planning System and the State Coastal Policy. This decision took 7 years and proved to be a very expensive process.
Artificial canal estate developments lead to serious adverse environmental and economic impacts and have been banned in Victoria and NSW. This week Tasmanian is waiting to see if the same certainty will be delivered in this state.
Now is the time to show your support for the Bill.
